A Couple of Words.

Why Are We Receiving CVs 37 Pages Long?

10/23/2018

Human Resources could be the most powerful and life-changing department in the whole hotel / restaurant structure.

Imagine HR departments that are built around sincere staff development, fighting for serious improvements and digital automation (on-line application forms, for example), digging deep into individualized motivation, and 1-on-1, curated staff mentoring.

Unfortunately, however, HR often gets stuck searching for Introduction Day snacks, hula hoops for fun & games, balloons for "ice-breaking," scrambling for training rooms, gathering employee birthdates, and organizing staff surveys on how well their workplace culture feels about management.

But let’s start slowly. Let’s first work on the CV.

A young bartender came in the other for an interview, but complained that his back was hurting.
I asked him why?
He said, “My CV weighs 25kgs.”
“That’s a lot of excess baggage you’re carrying, let’s see how we can help you.”

                                                               SUGGESTIONS
  • We can lose the transcripts that date all the way back to kindergarten – I don’t know anyone that takes transcripts seriously; at least not in the F&B industry. We’re seeking passion, playfulness, and great attitudes. If you failed Clay Animal Making in Kindergarten, no one cares. Please leave the transcripts out.
  • Fire Training is excellent, imperative and often exciting. Thrilled that you have had these experiences. All 43 of them. But no need to include 1 sheet of paper for each Fire Training. Again, please remove these.
  • 12 Hand-Washing Verifications. True, very important and the more verified training the better. But again, no need to include.
  • Monin syrup training course. Good to see that Monin encourages a lot of training. On bottled syrups. But again, no need.
  • Please limit your CV to no more than 2-3 pages tops; too many CVs are coming in that are lengthier than the “S” encyclopedia volume.
  • Your work history should be in reverse chronological order. Please start with your most recent place of employment first -- your most recent place of employment should not be buried 7 pages in.
  • A lot of CVs come with small pictures in the upper right/ left corner. This is fine, but let's see if we can get a more recent picture, not your high school graduation picture, shall we?
