Are Strong Food & Managers People Becoming Extinct?
First it was the Dodo Bird. Then the Passenger Pigeon. Next? The diligent, 16 hour a day, 6 days a week, Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner Food & Beverage Director. The Millennial Generation is typically portrayed as self-absorbed, compulsive job hoppers, lazy, and selfish. Looked at differently, they are simply smarter than we are. For Generation X, a generation that wears “I’m so tired, I could die,” like a badge of honor, it creates a simultaneous sense of frustration and envy when they hear the Millennial Generation proclaim, “I want to work to live rather than live to work. Working 16 hour days isn’t work life / balance – it’s not even work / life integration – it’s just work. And I’m not doing it.” So then…..for anyone that works in the restaurant/hotel business, finding a passionate, youthful Generation Y-er that wants to put up with the usual, long hours, multiple working holidays, missed life events, and relationships at home that are as deep as “Hello-and-Good Night,” good luck – they’re getting harder and harder to find. And rightfully so. While the Food & Beverage industry is never boring, juggling work demands, a family, your own well-being, and perhaps even other interests, this becomes nearly impossible. In a recent piece from The Guardian, they explain: “About half of millennials globally have shunned work, and even potential employers, that conflict with their beliefs. This suggests millennials don’t have a problem with standing their ground when asked to do something that goes against their values. And shouldn’t working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week be against everyone’s values? Comments are closed.
